Senior Reflection – My BGS Swimming Experience

Senior Reflection – My BGS Swimming Experience

Zandy Campbell – 2020 Senior

“ The BGS swimming community provides a wonderfully accepting and inclusive culture. Anyone who thinks they can have a go (and, more importantly, those who don’t) are accepted and encouraged by the more senior swimmers.

From a purely logistical standpoint, this means that the odds of a future champion being unearthed increase; more people have the opportunity to uncover a potential that would have otherwise remained hidden

From a more personal standpoint, it means that swimming is a place where that kid, that kid who doesn’t do any sport because he thinks he can’t, that kid who looks up to the seniors but thinks that world is beyond him, can finally realise that he is indeed capable. That he has the potential to reach his potential.

Swimming is a place where that hypothetical kid can thrive. And, perhaps most importantly of all, swimming is a place where that kid can have fun. Oftentimes, the competitive nature of sports can overshadow the good things about it; that hypothetical kid could be scared off by the illusion that the competition is everything, with no room for anything else. This is untrue for swimming. No matter when or where you start, it is possible for you to become part of the team, engage in competition and growth, and enjoy yourself all the while.”
